Coach Ahmad Smalls
Founder of the Triangle Tarheels and currently holds the position of Head Basketball Coach of the Boy’s 4th Grade Team and Girl’s 7th Grade Team.
Coach Smalls was introduced to basketball at the age of 12 years old learning to play the point guard position. He developed his love for the game while attending the 1987 Dean Smith UNC Basketball Camp. During the camp, Coach Smalls spent one on one time with one of his childhood idols “Point Guard, Kenny Smith” who took extra time to help him learn the basics of the game. Coach Smalls went on to play High School basketball at Independence High School and was a three year Varsity Letterman and two year Varsity Starter.
After High School Coach Smalls continued playing basketball at Lynchburg College, where he was a three year starter and still places in the top 10 in Lynchburg College history in Assist, Steals, and Three Pointers made.
After his playing career, Coach Smalls spent time as an Assistant Coach at Lynchburg College, Louisburg College, and EC Glass High School in Lynchburg, VA. He has head coaching experience at Holy Cross High School, and Amherst High School.
Coach Smalls served as Head Basketball Coach of the Garner Flames 9u 2010 team prior to founding the Triangle Tarheels and led the Flames to a YBOA Nationals 2nd place finish and a 28-7 record. In 2011, Coach Smalls coached the Triangle Tarheels 5th grade team, leading them to a number 22 AAU D1 National Ranking and a 34 – 7 record. In 2012, he led the Triangle Tarheels 5th grade team to a YBOA D1 National Championship and a 40-6 record. In that same year, Coach Smalls led the Triangle Tarheels 6th grade team to an AAU Super Regional Championship, and placed second in the YBOA National Tournament and concluded the season with a 42-6 record. Coach Smalls also works as a Camp Director of the International Pro Am Professional Exposure Basketball Camps.
